Voltage converter

Hello,
I have a voltage converter that goes from 120 VAC to 240 VAC . It is a multitap toroidal transformer.
I actually need to step down the voltage from 240 to 120 but couldn't find one locally .
Could i just feed this transformer backwards ? Plug 240 V in the output and get 120 V at the input (i would only need to build a couple of custom cables for I/O)
This box has a breaker as on/off switch would running it backwards trip the breaker?
Any comments would be appreciated

Would it be better to rewire internally ? move the hot after the breaker to the secondary and one of the taps on the primary to the output socket?

You can definitely use it backwards. I would get a 4 pole terminal block and some spades from your local electrical supply store and make it configurable.

That's a good idea, but that means that the way to go is changing the wiring internally vs just leaving as is and using it backwards
