Hi

I'm new to the board here. I am in the process of putting together the parts to build a Sta-Level. I have a 3U case, power transformer, all the tubes, What kind of VU meters were used in the Gates Sta-Level? Are they just a standard VU meter or are they something special? Would the meters from Mouser work?

Thanks!

I can't recall offhand, but I remember seeing one that had what appeared to be an old Weston. Any VU meter would work, I suppose.

You're not talking about those Mouser Modutec meters are you? I can't imagine those things having the ballistics of an old Simpson or Weston...

The Gates uses a dB meter.

Most VU meters will not work well because they have a rectifier built into them. A dB meter is a d.c operated meter where as most VU meters are for a.c operation.

In practice most moving coil d.c meters can be used. The 4 sta levels I`ve built have all had different dB meters, that were just ones I happened to like the look of in the Surplus shop or were supplied by the client. I didn`t even really pay any attention to what current they required for F.S.D (full scale deflection)
