Way OT-any of you guys Flash MX 2004 experts?

I'll double check tomorrow but...it looks like a simple layer trick.

<1> Layer (grad: bgcolor to trans)
<2> Text (Contrasting color)
<3> Layer (bgcolor)

The whole scrollable UI "look" is built. The scroll is an animation using a mouse action/script to "GOTO: next frame".

I can write you a tutorial tomorrow - i'm really tired right now.
