I was reading somewhere about a new device with a "tilt" eq..

apparently it's some kind of shelving eq in the midrange frequencies that changes the low end as well?

anyone seen it yet?

I dunno how he does it but its on the new Tonelux stuff - Paul Wolff...

I guess a Baxandall filter network at 100Hz and 10K would have a similar effect with a custom two deck pot...

Think I remember seeing Peter (clintrubber) posting a circuit...or if not him someone from here...what came up in the search?

A old TAA issue had a HiFi preamp build with a tilt control. Early 80's?

Quad 34 preamp:

I used something like this in a side chain contour for a noise gate. It was pretty effective for preferentially gating out HF or LF noise sources. Seems kind of crude for listening to, but YMMV.

seems like it would be cool to use while tracking for things like overheads, needing a bit more top end than bottom etc.

I might mock something up and try it.

Hey John...

Your Avatar is a tilt control!

Actually, it is the most useful thing I have ever done. It clears up everything you put it on. Just a little, maybe 1 or 2 dB is enough.

The original design was a way to provide the HI-FI listener with a tone control without having a tone control, so they could say that it didn't have a tone control... The TILT allowed a little adjustment without being drastic.

"keep it simple, stupid" as they say. I am also using it for the side chain of a compressor. It works well there too.

Hey Mr Wolff

I saw the video of your console at NAMM. Nice compressor demo. :thumb:

As I said in another thread, in the mid eighties I built this tilt eq section from the Quad34 preamp, and found it very usefull. I would be curious to hear it's effect again.

Everyone loves it. Most set it a 1:00 and leave it (slight treb boost, slight bass cut). Seems to clear up everything.

Yo dude,,

It's a little too simple for my taste. Kind of like a Baxandall tone control with the bass and treble knobs geared together so one turns down when the other turns up..

But if the boys and girls with the pictures of dead presidents like it, the customer is always right (even when they're wrong). :sam:

IMO just right for side chains where you're not doing precision surgery (or listening to it).

Those who are familiar with guitar -effects would find this similar to the Big Muff tone control --love it or hate it.

Edit:
I see this was covered in the earlier post.

Good point about the Big Muff tone control; that one hadn't crossed my mind.

I've got an RCA tube preamp from their install products line with a tilt EQ, and it's pretty handy. Nothing else I have is like it at all.

If you want a 1 knob EQ it seems like a good approach. My home system has no EQ, while I used to sell a 4 band parametric (kit) back in the '70s. Different tools for different jobs.

The original market for the tilt control was home listeners whose primary concern was the music; it offered a gentle compensation for mild variations in balance from LP to LP. Actually not a bad idea, and perhaps useful in recording too.

Peace,
Paul
