Hi the lab!
Looking to replace some electrolytics that was used in the signal path of a juno 60 with film caps.
I have been told it would improve the sound.
The ones I found which could fit (2,5mm spaced) for value 1uf/50V and 0,22uf/50V are the MKS02.
Is it a good choice? there's better film caps in this 2,5mm size?
I would like to stay away from the big (nice) film caps which are way too big for the juno circuit and too much voltage.
thanks a bunch!

What I would not like to do... ;) https://static.gearslutz.com/board/imgext.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fi29.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc269%2Ftobytobi%2FReCap.jpg&h=3e373f3757e2a326779245a9d7f865f3

There's no such thing as "too much voltage" when it comes to capacitor ratings. Just like there's no such thing as "too much current" in the ratings of a power supply.

Sure, but size matters here and a cap too big could be problematic as well electronically I think

Electronically? Nope, no way. Physically though, of course size can be a problem.

What about that? (attached screen capture)
I did it in a peterson preamp, fitting huge sprague orange drop caps, and to my ears it didn't sound right
It was easily hearable
So my question was if there's any other film caps small like the mks02?
and maybe better?

What are the voltage ratings of the Electrolytics you want to replace?

good selections of film caps here:

What sound improvement would you get?

I'm usually quite sceptical towards these kind of "Mods" if it would be something in the line of changing a value to another ok, but just putting a film cap in there instead of some electrlytic and "boom suddenly the sound is so much better" come on...

If the electrolytic is old, which it most probably is in this case, do it. Me myself wouldn't bother with using something else but what the roland guys put in there but new and fresh.

A full recap is much more important if you haven't  undertaken such task

The original sound quite good to me so I'm not sure what you are expecting to get out of this.

And let's be serious, it's a low price (back then) Japanese analog synth from the 80s not some 2000000€  mackintosh amplifier

Just my take on this

He would get no sound improvement at all

can you develop why a electrolytic would sound as good as a film?
of course I'm not hoping a night and day result...
of course I want to keep original sound...
of course it's not a jupiter 8....
of course the whole thing is being recapped and cleaned as it sounds like sh*t and have problems....
of course  want to make music with it asap but for now it don't works...

men!
I'm not asking a biggie here....just wanted to know what others films caps would exist in 2,5mm format...

I'm just giving you the advice to spend the time and energy with the repair and recap, as that is going to be time consuming.  And probably  yield much greater results than change of coupling capacitor type.

But some people spend 100€ on guitar cables, what can you do?

Vinyl is HiFi, right?

I agree! I just thought film caps wouldn't hurt here as it is possible to put them instead of the old electros and is the "heart" of the keyboard
Will see how it sounds like

Well, stick some film caps instead of lytics and let us know how it sounds.

Worst case scenario you'll not notice any improvement in sound but still you'll have less capacitors to replace in 20 years time ☺

I don't see the reason why not use film caps as long as you're gonna recap the whole thing anyway.

Synths are tricky. With something like a compressor, you can easily hear and measure everything because you know exactly what you feed in.

The MKS is fine, the Pana FR is very good if you can't fit the MKS or want to go cheaper, you can bypass them with the MKP/FKP, it adds a bit of "air" but it's possible that you won't hear it with your synth at all because there is no "air". Hearable and measurable in the studio gear, though. You may try to shunt the MKS as well.

Just don't overthink it, it's not a mastering EQ.
