Wiring XLR's on unbalanced device?

I've got some Quad Eight noise gates which have unbalanced i/o but are wired with XLR's.
They're a bit hummy as they're currently wired, & I seem to recall someone (possibly Jakob?) posted some info on dealing with this issue.
I can't find anything in the archives, & all I remember is the Input XLR's were wired differently than the output XLR's.

What you connect before and after the gates determines the best way to wire them. There's no all-purpose answer.
