many other kinds of polymer foam dosn't fall apart with age or gas like pu foam does. still, then the issue with these other foams is that it will never break down, ever. not a good alternative
 
unfortunately an eco foam is exactly what you don't want in a microphone box. any particles it gives off will adhere to the capsule. the more biodegradable it is, the more the microphone is damaged over time. the issue with polyurethane foam comes directly from the fact that it is biodegradable. when i said "not a good alternative" i was just thinking long-term in terms of disposing of the box 200-300 years from now. a "forever foam" is perfect for storing a microphone. Ideally, you don't want any natural or synthetic fiber of any kind in a microphone box, nor a foam that might degrade into smaller fiber-like pieces.
