many other kinds of polymer foam dosn't fall apart with age or gas like pu foam does. still, then the issue with these other foams is that it will never break down, ever. not a good alternative

unfortunately an eco foam is exactly what you don't want in a microphone box. any particles it gives off will adhere to the capsule. the more biodegradable it is, the more the microphone is damaged over time. the issue with polyurethane foam comes directly from the fact that it is biodegradable. when i said "not a good alternative" i was just thinking long-term in terms of disposing of the box 200-300 years from now. a "forever foam" is perfect for storing a microphone. Ideally, you don't want any natural or synthetic fiber of any kind in a microphone box, nor a foam that might degrade into smaller fiber-like pieces.

Couldn't the same be said for the wooden box itself?
Yeah ... anything organic in the box, or the box itself, good point.

I tend to avoid this problem by stuffing speaker cabinets with synthetic fiber fill purchased at the local sewing hobby store.

AND, I often make screw-on cabinet backs with a bead of thin silocone or other compressible tape to seal the box, yet allow me to open it later without damage. I use a good wood glue for the rest of the joints.

MY POINT is, I make my cabinets easy to maintain and modify later, permitting me to replace any acoustic damping material with new or other material down the road.

Just my take. Your mileage may vary.
