Best starting point, many great kits for it , not a whole lot more to it than a champ, and useful tones
Still have my deluxe , and still dig it, my champ and the ax84 all sold off long ago.

Agreed, build something you will like.

letterbeacon, that is a very clean build you have there.  But carbon resistors?

Warning! My build is not clean by any standard.
I have no face plate to work with.  Only a Hammond chassis with drilled holes in it.  That is why it looks like it does; total amateur.

My first amp build is from http://londonpower.com/  <-- Everyone should at least check the site out.
I did a 3 channel pre-amp. That contains.  LP-PRE, Z-PRE, LINE, BFX.

This pic is not correct.  I cleaned up the "wires all over the place" a bit.

understand that is just the pre-amp and it was 3 channels.  One could go the really simple route.

Here is a pic of 1 channel and PSU( Power supply) pre-amp.  This one was too easy.  But sounds great!
It is the S-PRE.

Now to the power amp side of things.
Again, very messy.  Pic is not up to date.

Still working on face plate.  But it works.

I just wanted to throw this out there.  If you have an amp that you really like, I suggest get Power Scaling http://www.londonpower.com/power-scaling

Check out this book...

http://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Amplifier-Handbook-Understanding-Amplifiers/dp/087930863X

It has a ton of information for you if you're not totally knowledgeable on the subject and then provides instructions for building a small Fender Champ type amp. It's a great read even if you go another route on the build.
