Wont a 3/4 or 1w piece intorduce added current drain?

I meant a physically bigger part, but 1/4 watt.

A resistor's size and power dissipation rating are one and the same (the bigger the part, the more surface area it has in contact with the air to dissipate heat.

I read somewhere on here that this would work for the 1gig resistors. I just wanted to post that I got an email saying it is being discontinued.

Not really... It's just being replaced for a new RoHS-compliant part (the one we're getting from the Digi-Key groupbuy).

This is the resistor that i used for my Dorsey mod MC012.
This one is 2G with the size of a 1/2 watt.
I got it from NEWARK. they also have 1G values.

I used to use the chip versions of these for cooled IR detector preamps:

I had to test them at low (~77K) temps to weed out the really bad ones. I remember one that was metastable in value---with current it would sit there and generate random telegraph signals at roughly a few Hz.

But the approximate value for that one was 10^12 ohms in an 0805 package, so they are probably pretty good parts around a gigaohm.
