Gerber files for DIY PCBs

What is the general consensus for gerber files around here. Are they typically shared or is it a case by case basis? Is there a database or would you contact individuals about modifying and expanding upon existing designs?

I have purposely never shared Gerbers for my projects as I feared wholesale manufacturing.

I had an issue with this anyway.......

well, a few publish Gerbers, most not.
most published are "untested".
most unpublished are from people don't knowing Gerbers, they publish PDFs or PNGs for home-etching.
and many people don't publish since they know the danger of abuse (happened in the past).
I'm one of the non sharing guys.

I don't mind sharing home etch files but gerbers are only for manufacturing, so you're basically supplying all your work (lots of hours and a bit of brain power) to whoever wants to turn a profit on the cheap (no labor to do the layout, look up component dimensions and specs )
