Howdy,

I have a few condenser mics that I thought might be good candidates for modifying. I have an AKG C4000B, and a couple of C-1000S.

I was wondering first off, are these good candidates for modifying? It would seem so, since they are IMO of fairly reliable quality to begin with.

Has anyone out there ever done or heard of mods for these specific mics, and if so, specifically what improvements can be made?

I realize that the word "improvement" can be subjective to taste, but I'm open to suggestions.
Jacob.

easiest mod on C1000S is to remove the foam on the inside of the grill. never use it unless i need supercardioid and all other mics are busy. some more advanced mods would be cool.

I've tried that, it does open it up a little bit.BTW, I think these mics really shine on Grand Piano in an XY about 4-6 feet from the soundboard with the lid open. I've also heard you can make them into omnis by taping off the rear vents, although I am not sure this makes a true omni (anyone?)

HMMMMmmm, would partially unscrewing the capsule grill have an effect of "tuning" the polar pattern, by varying the distance of the vents from the capsule? It would only maybe shift a centimetre or two, but I wonder if it would have an effect of tuning the polar pattern response of the high frequencies?
