so its been totally troublefree since I bought it a few years ago but its been acting up...

once when I fired it up or more commonly after being on for a while the display will show the  program its on (or the version) and no other numbers,  the reverb will still function but with no ablility to do anything, then if i reboot sometimes it will flash all the leds and not get further.  the battery looks old, has some acid starting to leak out of it, not  enough to get onto the board but enough that is def time to change it.

the unit also has old looking frako caps in the psu.

my question is..    can a dead battery cause this behaviour?

Im not an electronics expert.

oh and if I leave it for a bit and cycle the power it seems to come back,  and then eventually do the same thing

Remove the battery off the CPU card immediately and clean the pcb around the pcb area very well.
clean the edge connector.

The battery only stores user settings when the unit is powered down so yes, other than that the unit will work with no battery in place.

However, leakage from an old battery is a common problem and can damage the CPU board, sometimes beyond repair. As suggested above, try cleaning the area around the battery and replace any components that look like they may have been damaged by battery leakage. Also, try cleaning the edge connectors and making sure that the ribbon cables are firmly connected. Maybe you can swap CPU boards with another machine. Beyond that, it gets really tough.
