If it would be possible to create 48v from one of those 'plug-in power'
sockets found on Sony domestic camcorders, DAT's and MD's?
Might be a really silly question

But....what the hell!!!!!

I don't think there is a standard for that plug-in-power stuff. A few volts through 2k resistors is what we can expect. Using a switching reg to get 48 V is possible, but you won't get high currents. For some mics it might be OK, but not for all.

I realize it's not exactly what you're asking about but Sony makes a little unit that connects to the (proprietary) hot shoe connection on the top of many of their camcorders and provides phantom power to an XLR:

Scroll down a bit to the part about the CAC-12. The page says it puts out 48V but at my workplace a few years ago we had several PD100 cameras which came with these adapters and I recall measuring only about 24 volts from them - enough for the included microphone and a lot of other mics as well.
