I'm poking around with the free version of dip trace.
I can't figure out how I get the the copper ring of the pad, only on one side (bottom).
When I place a pad, the copper appears on both layers.
Anyone?

I'm not sure about Dip Trace. I've never used it. But most CAD PCB programs
let you select "pad properties" and set what layers the pad will appear on.
Click on a pad, then right click and see if this is possible.

Hope this helps.

I have DipTrace but all I can remember is it's an "interesting exercise" figuring out how to use it ;-) (sorry haven't used it for about 6 mths)

No, I want the hole for the pad through the boards obviously, but I don't want copper on both sides. This is what happens when I insert a pad, the copper ring appears on both sides. This is unwanted.

I don't use DipTrace, but I know with my PCB layout software that if you are trying to make a single sided board, you just ignore the top layer and generate only gerber files for the bottom.  There isn't a way in eagle (without a large amount of work) to have a through hole pad on one side.
