Got a 12v (from a Time Machine, I think) - any reason to think they are of any better quality than the average (say the one from a MOTU Traveler, for instance)?

So "even" Apple started cheaping out. Not a shocker, profits gotta come from SOMEWHERE. "Back in the day" they still used Delta stuff (which is implicitly damn near bulletproof, imho).

Anyway, should still be more reliable than MOTU's own outsourced one - i have a Traveler PSU that's totally toast, still haven't gotten around to rebuilding it (just for funsies).

Not even sure the one that came with the eBay Traveler was the original; just marked "OEM" (is that even a brand?).

I don't think it is the original, because it's rated 2A, and the Traveler only requires 1A.

Apple's Time Machine is known for failing because of the PSU. Not because it's underrated, but because it gets too hot. People have been known to drill holes in the case...

I had to source a replacement SMPS for a TC electronic Konnekt 24D requiring 12V at 2A ,
I found a HP supply made by Delta with a 12V/3.3A rating . I added a clip on ferrite with a few turns at the output end of the cable , runs nice and cool and has plenty of extra capacity for when the headphone amps are driven .

Older smps of quailty manufacture are worth looking out for , there likely to be through hole components , so its easy to fault find or replace a part if the need arises .
Its seem nowadays the quality of the electrolytics is especially suspect , when the turn around time on the tech is a only a matter of a few years before it hits the scrap heap any money spent extending the service life of the PSU is wasted , so their not going to do it ,

Interesting - I'll run the Traveler with this thing for an hour or so and see if it gets hot.

It's the Time Machine's case that's the problem, not the PSU. The second release was corrected.
