When reading Warpie's thread relating to IEC inlets, I just saw an ad offering 'Dating Russian Ripe Women'. I'm trying to figure out the connection... At least it didn't offer to date 'under-ripe' women

what is the problem?

You like 'ripe Russian women'?  ;D

Sorry... No problem. I just thought it was a pretty bizarre 'product' to be marketing on a geek group and found the concept amusing. I totally expect to get ads offering the latest scope from RS or whatever. I would've thought the latter to be a better revenue earner for the site's proprietors than 'ripe Russian women'...but what would I know about the preferences of the members here  :p

edit - for the record, this is the only site I visit where I do occasionally actually click on the ads. I sometimes see items of tech advertised that I haven't elsewhere.  I wonder if the somewhat random ads showing at the moment are due to the new software needing optimisation? If the site gets revenue from clicks (and so it should - I'm fully aware of how great a resource it is) it'll be better off with scope ads and the like - wouldn't it?  :p

I'am not sure we get the same ads..... I get swiss stuff. electronics distributor and the like....

ads (can be) are targeted today, using tracking and cookies to recognize individual users or computers at least. may be you need to rethink your internet usage... just joking....

You can click an X box in the top right hand corner of most ads and report them if you think they are inappropriate - at least you can on my chrome book - not sure if this is a function of the group web site or not.

We are slowly edging closer to the future imagined in "minority report" where retailers will recognize us from our eyeballs. For now it will mostly be them recognizing our smart phones but the future is coming and at least some science fiction is plausible, as compared to the rest of that movie.

The adds are always related to my google searches....

When I was looking for a scope, I got adds for scopes here. When I was looking for Aladdin in the dubbed danish version for my kid, I got adds for CDON and Amazon children's DVDs, etc.

So clear your cache  ;D

I would like to make it clear, for the record, that at no point have I EVER performed a Google search for 'Russian Ripe Women'. At the time I saw the ad I was idly surfing on my girlfriend's computer. I thought the ad bizarre and amusing and we both had a laugh. I suppose, in hindsight, it was funnier at the time. She's had a house-sitter in for the last 2 weeks whilst we've been on holiday... However, she's the mother-in-law of one of her friends. I can't imagine her being interested in 'Russian Ripe Women'

edit - I'm now getting ads (my office PC) for 'london recording studio' - which is of more interest to me. All we need now is for the software to advertise suppliers for hard-to-find passives and semiconductors and I'll be clicking away :)

GRR - 'Russian Ripe Women' is back, on my office PC. Ethan - are you taunting me? Anyway - what is a 'Russian Ripe Woman'? Can she tell you when to eat a banana or something?

Could be any of the keywords or words relating to a different search.

"How to tell if an avocado is ripe", for example, depending on how they set up the add.

Amongst other things, yes.

Back after quite a long time and already pissed off by all the fucking spam advertising.....
Is there a solution to have a forum with no ads? Would love to spent some money on that!

Kind regards,

Willem.

Russian Ripe Women
Good morning Mods,
A little confused as to why I am now getting adverts for "Russian Ripe Women?"
Men possibly but women! Ripe, goodness -----no toy boys?
Also a link to RedTube (#268051) which may be the RRW in action. (Note to innocents: RedTube is heavy pornography.)

I suspect those ripe Russians bought a big block of ads, and Google has to put them in the most unlikely places.

Otherwise.... it's your search patterns.  Stop looking for Russian transistors, ripe bananas, and women's hair-care all in the same browser.

Why am I seeing all these ads for some weird japanese tentacle porn and anime pillows on this website???  ???  :(

Just kidding, install Adblock plus and Ghostery and free yourself of the oppression of targeted advertising and ads in general. You can just give your money to support this forum. There's the donate button. No one has to watch those ads.

As a sidenote, I am a big fan of Ghostery since it has also librated me of the omnipresent commentary/laugh-track/hyenas on news items and articles of today.

Please tell me how!

AdBlock Plus.
Ghostery.

The former blocks the ads. The latter blocks the trackers that let the advertisers know what you're looking at, and what links you followed.

Install Ghostery. You will be astonished at how many trackers are on some sites. The worst of these are the "clickbait" sites, like upworthy and such.

While there are certain forums (such as this one) where viewing ads would help pay the bills, I'm too lazy to deal with disabling the blocking on a per-site basis.

Anyone who clicks on an ad on a general-interest web site is a fucking idiot who shouldn't be on the Internet. I am serious.

I am happy that advertising supports this group. However, of late, the number of trackers and beacons attached to some parts of the group I frequent have reached 25. The result is that page loading is considerably lengthened and some pages never finally load. Disabling all ads and beacons speeds up the response no end.

So my question is, just how many ad providers, trackers and beacons is it necessary for groupdiy to service? My view is that at the moment it is enough to be detrimental to the service the group provides. For the moment ghostery is denying them all.

Cheers

Ian

I tend to avoid sites with this problem.

On one which had formerly been worth the struggle, but hit some Last Straw, I protested loudly and also boycotted. We found some slight improvement after massive investigation by the forum operator. While his own coding was generous, by far the bigger issue is gigantic humongous and often obfuscated code by the ad servers (particularly sub-arms of Google).

A third tar-pit is some of the places that users host their avatars and illustrations.

On Windows FireFox, No-Script is perhaps more helpful than annoying.
