Boards are ordered/BOM is ordered from Reichelt to check (I have the THAT stuff laying around, but that BOM is short enough, that we can count it as verified).

Still need to sort a few BOM issues (I am looking at switched pots, and see they have some from Banzai to free up some space on the front, colour trim/blend etc)
Still no work done on the front panel layout.

Five boards still available from this test/prototype run - additional builders is always a great help to gain some more feedback.

Rev 2 schematic and board layout errata

R10-11-14-15, change 100R to 22K

Orientation of molex gain connector reversed (easy to reverse on pot)

Misread VCA stage as inverting overall, with following errata as a consequence

Corrected reversed input phase and bypass (for rev 1 board builders, simply cross jump the 22K for 5534 or 100R for 1206

On IC 8 and 9
  • cut connection between pin 1 and 2, put 10K resistor between those pins.
  • Cut trace going to pin 3
  • Connect pin 3 to pin 5 (Can use a resistor terminal leg).
  • Connect the trace previously going to pin 3 to pin 2 with 10K resistor in series.

Circuit verified and working except for colour add-on (Dont have a module to test it with). This is pretty trivial thing compared to the rest.

Good to know re errata, is the board still rev1 at this point or is there a rev2 with these things fixed?

Board is rev 1.

I have 5 boardsets left.

Only boards I will offer are the current ones. Interest has been pretty low, and expenses have exceeded what has been covered on the boards.

When the casing is also done and completely verified (I recently got very busy, someone else might beat me to the casing part), I will upload the final version gerber to the group, so anyone can order their board anywhere they like :)

PS - my own casing test will be 2RU. I couldnt bring myself to do something with those tiny knobs (attached FPD file in zip format).

Thanks Gustav, makes sense about publishing the gerber instead of manufacturing more. Sorry to hear the expenses haven’t been covered.

Ahh 2U gives a bit more room, definitely…!

Cheers

Ah, no worries - we will sell the unit and break even on the economy. Didnt mean for it to sound gloom, I just meant, it wont be worth it to carry the boards judging from this run.

We were always gonna upload the gerbers as a gift to the group for the anniversary. Stated that in the start :)

Gustav.

As a novice builder (I've built some pedals and can follow kits instructions) should I wait for the gerber and revisions to be ironed out or jump into ordering a pcb since this would be my first intermediate build and there isn't a step by step? I really need to nail down the basics of understanding schematics though also. Advice would be appreciated thanks!

The small changes are very minor, and my description is detailed, so youll know exactly what to do with the board in hand.

Theres still 5 available :)

Hi Gustav & Isak
a bit not much exciting.....,

unfortunately actually diy is getting a little expensive for various type of units,
in addition in the used market it is not difficult to find ready-to-use units,
also in 500 shape,
at little more than the cost of the materials needed for the diy one,
saving the assembly and testing time,
.....however the most fun side,

maybe that even the diy lack of the decrease in interest in general from the younger generation
who all seem to want to be only socials influencers....,

perhaps a version in the 500 format might have more interest ?
As many people prefer the 500 format,
also because it is more comfortable to place in the operational area,
in addition to allowing to have units of different types in the same portable box,
only as well.

Awesome thread!

As I've not even built the original gssl, I feel a tad unworthy of commenting on more features additions to the great one's already implemented in this anniversary edition.

I find all the mods implemented great additions to the design. I saw mentioned that the sc input hardly ever was implemented as an external input; if I built this, I'd definitely want it as compressors are used as much as "duckers" for other tracks as actual compression of input source.

Maybe implement a simple eq in the sc filter section? My Kush Tweakers have this "treble smash" mode that inserts a high end boost in the sc, making the compressor way more sensitive to hihats etc.

Modularization of the design; if the sections were on separate, but easily connectable PCBs, they would be very reusable in other designs.

500-series compatibility; I know this might be hard, but my studio lacks space more than it does dynamic processors. Having this in a 2-3 unit wide 500 series module would be very space effective as opposed to 2ru

Okay, moving way out of the boundaries of the design here now, but would it be impossible to add a 3-way crossover and mixer to use 3x of the design as a multiband vca compressor?
I know there's all sorts of problems regarding phase and possibly other factors when trying to combine three timing altering processors that work on different areas of the frequency domain; but there are hardware multiband designs out there that presumably manages (drawmer and maselec for instance)

Anyhow awesome update to a legendary diy project; I'm much more inclined to build this design than I ever was of the original. Hat's off !

Sorry if I wasnt being clear about the 2RU set-up shared being my personal choice. This is DIY, so do your own. With the panel I shared, you have all the info and values to port over.

Someone else would have to make a 500 series design for you, but you can easily fit this into 1RU if you dont mind tiny knobs.

Do you reckon this build is too hard for someone a few steps above beginner? This has all the features I want and I have been wanting to do DIY that's not a complete kit, I just worry it would be out of my league.

I've done Capi VP28s + opamps with no issues and feel relatively competent reading BOMs.
