I dont have the money to buy even a cheap calibrated mic for a RTAA demo i just got.

Is it reasonable to use a panasonic electret? The frequency response seems very flat on the spec sheet.

Also, I was wonder what experience any of you have with using a RTAA in a Live setting.

As I understand the process, I simply pump pink noise thru the PA, and adjust the eq to get as close to flat across the frequency range.

Does this sound about right??

TIA

Denny

lol, If i had access to a real one, I'd just borrow it all the time

Thanks, for the answer tho. Makes sense to me??

Any thoughts on my usage in a live setting?? For "dialing" in the PA?

Most "calibration" is only level-based. Bruel & Kjaer use a pistonphone AFAIK, that's all they do. Omnis tending naturally to be flat, that's all they usually have to do!

I remember seeing a DIY article for a mic like this, but can't remember where. Seems like they basically just used a piece of hard copper tubing to house the capsule along with a Behringer ECM8000 type circuit. There is lots of info from Marik (where's he been lately, anyways? :? ) on modifying the ECM8000 here and at the HR mic forum: http://homerecording.com/bbs/forumdisplay.php?s=59d5aaed24fbc086c3a5029e787e8793&f=27 Just search on "Marik" and "ECM8000". He does the Linkwitz (sp?) mod to the capsule to reduce noise and designed a better circuit. If you are going to make one, may as well incorporate the mods - then you'll have a nice omni recording mic as well.

There is another thread going over this stuff right now. The panasonic electret with the linkwitz mod is a fine mic and should be considered able to be used in calibrating parts. I've used marik's circuit and layed out a board for it to fit inside of the ECM8000. take a look at the other thread and see.
Well, darnit, the lower-cost Earthworks use Panasonic capsules, so they're obviously up to the task
I thought I read about this before... but it seemed like it was just speculation. Do you know for sure Keith?

Mike_relay: cheack out Michael Joly's post in this thread...
