I'm selling some VU's on eBay and I just received this question:

"Dear hypnopixel,

Hi NOLA Ebay friend!

I wonder if you would understand our need.

we have an mp3 player/recorder recording from a tape out via a Mackie board. We can't see the audio level on the mp3 recorder, therefor it clips. Would we go from the Line OUT from the Mackie....into your VU meters....then into our MP3 recorder?

I am on the cusp of only 100 feedback, so I am no ebay makher, but I have learned that uber-kind is the best policy.
A simple explanation of the "raw material" nature of the meters takes seconds. So would a quick gain structure "how to".
