Is it safe to clean solder flux off PCBs that have transformers (in cans) mounted on them? I've done it a couple times very carefully, but Im always afraid that if any IPA (or the like) gets in the transformer that it will melt windings insulation. What is the best way to deal with flux with pcb mounted transformers?

Yes, it is generally safe to clean solder flux off PCBs with transformers mounted on them using isopropyl alcohol (IPA). However, to avoid any potential damage to the transformer windings:

  1. Use a Controlled Amount: Apply IPA sparingly and avoid soaking the transformer.
  2. Direct Cleaning: Focus on cleaning around the transformer rather than directly on it.
  3. Dry Quickly: Ensure the board dries thoroughly and quickly after cleaning to prevent IPA from seeping into the transformer.
By taking these precautions, you can effectively clean the flux without risking damage to the transformer.
