converting gerbers for adjustments

so these days, I have been doing pcb's with Kicad. it works fairly well.
I was given some gerbers generated with proteus for a project. They all end in .txt
I can open them up in just about any online viewer and see the PCB and how it should be.
I can even upload them to inexpensive board house and see what they would look like and order them.
I am wondering if there is a way to import these back in Kicad for tweaking. Mainly I want to make the board smaller and change it to be SMT
It's mainly an academic venture and if necessary I can redraw the schematic and boards in Kicad but I am wondering if there is a way to do it. Every attempt so far has yielded an error.
