Hello, Everyone,

Does anyone know which pins are needed for proper data transmission for a Thunderbolt 3/4 cable? I am wanting to convert this to a panel mount connection of some sort but I don't believe I need all of the pins to be connected to transfer data to and from an audio interface. I have tried USB-C through connectors but these do not work, which surprised me since it should just be a pin to pin connection.

This is great article tearing down a Thunderbolt 3 cable:

https://www.bytecable.com/thunderbolt-3-cable-teardown/

The connector is USB-C with uses 24 pins but in the teardown there are 15 connections being made. Ideally I would cut a 6' Thunderbolt 3 cable and solder the needed ends to an XLR type connector as a through with the matching cable mount connector on the other half. This is something that I have done over the years regarding MIDI, Macbook power, Ethernet, etc., where a through panel option was needed but the matching connector was not available in a panel mount form or an existing cable infrastructure was the only path for transmission.

Thanks!

Paul
