anyone built a DI box themselves? whats the difference in sound comparing transformer designs to opamp ones? got schematics?

also, is it worth building one give you can get b**ringer cheapo ones for £30.. do they sound worthless?

I haven't heard them yet, but you mean the single or double one ? The double one is cheaper and I saw it uses (needs to use actually) lo-current opamps with lesser specs. FWIW...

my ultradi di120 uses sumpthing like 92f145 ?14pin surfacemount,2 of them,no transformers

I built a simple FET-based DI box that I use in the studio quite frequently. It's transformerless, and I think it sounds great, especially considering that I built it for about $20.

I put in box Royer fet mod mic circuit ,that i built for russian electret capsule and it gets some dibox use (pieso)time to time ,maybe too much gain but it works.

there's a country hick floating around here somewhere.

and i don't mean Flatpicker!

I tried it on my bass and a guitar at a friends studio. We both think it does an excellent job, but I am biassed. It is not very expensive to build, with the exception of the transformer. It took me awhile to grasp DC-DC converters, but with the patients of this forum I finally got it. They are somewhat tricky to get good clean DC from, as Gus has mentioned on other threads. This DI is certainly worth the effort though.
