Hi

I have inherited a 1985 Dynamix console (I think star sound, nothing else identifying it)- pic attached.

Some of the pots need replacing as they have ceased or are treacly/stick i.e. 3x Gain preamps, auxiliary, and an EQ treble. I guess one of each type in channel.
I can't find schematics on the web for the console. so can't determine what type to get.

Does anyone known what is needed ??

Thanks

p.s. Any info on mixer is welcome

I have seen a few of these in my time. A cheapo British make, I think ... pots are probably Omeg.

If the pots are sticking, a quick spray into the opening with Silicone Grease PTFE, available from Maplin, will do the trick. Not too much though.

Hi Dan

Not high certainly, but ok for messing about.
Should be able to get a decent sound out of it, I hope. Bought it as experiment to take me out of mixing in the box.

I sprayed it with servisol super 10, it cleaned up pots a bit. Will try the stuff you mentioned. Popping down to maplins now. This is a final attempt at spraying as think will change pots if not expensive.

Yes, the pots Omeg. If spray fails will call then and see how much it will cost to replace 180 pots !!

It looks like a mission to change the pots as have to cut wires to remove boards.

Yep the Silicon grease loosened the pot. But then other pots started arcing bizarre!! Any managed to loosen'em up, but will need to change them at some point.

During mean time have noticed a connection/short problem. Sometimes when touch a random knob the signal breaks. It could be related to a gain pot on a different channel than one previously stuck.
Also PFL light was on constantly and by chance touch a swith, a pop and it now seems to work as it should. Off when no PFL pressed and on when a PFL selected.

I wonder if all these things are due to the mixer not really been used properly for a long time and now with it being properly tested and used it's shaking off the cob webs.

Is this likely ???

Hi guys

Anyone based in Kent, UK that could take a quick look at this mixer and guide me on how to fix it ??

I suspect it's a capacitor that has blown on main master strip as volume cuts in and out. It sounds like fading in and out. When there's no volume either on left or right monitor, if you boost pre amp or juggle faders a bit it kicks back in. There's no logic to it. Not dirty pots.

Sometimes volume cuts when press a switch then it's press some randomly, jiggle a few knobs and it comes back on.
I have opened it open see real times to spray pots and have a look to try and identify the problem, but can't work it out. Stumped!!

Anyone know of anyone I could drive console to ??

Thanks

It may help to clean any insert jacks by spraying with contact cleaner and inserting/removing a jack plug several times. These cheaper type of desks are notorious for the breakjack connections going intermittent over time with dust and/or smoke.

If that doesn't help you will be looking for dry solder joints on the PCBs, hope it doesn't come to that.

These are NOT valuable mixers, there are plenty of MUCH better mixers out there that you can buy for bargain prices these days. Don't waste too much time on it.

Hi Dan

Thanks for advice! :)

Will try spraying jacks.
I didn't notice any dry joints/solder while having a nosey around checking for leaky/popped capacitors.

You are totally right about wasting much time on console ! If spraying jacks doesn't do any thing guess will be looking for new console.

Any advice on what should look out for or at least aim for (budget don't ask LOL!). ??
