Hi, to answer the most asked question. Its a full 1084 minus the mike level input section. The mike input part will come later once this beast passes tests. If you already have a 1290 you can of course just plug in as normal but I'm sure there is a way to bypass some circuits in the 1290 to avoid going through the extra gain section and XFR.

My PM box is overwhelmed with message that I may not answer right away. Please excuse me if I don't answer all your questions promptly or at all. Just keep nudging me and I will.  8)

Jim...my 1290 sounds thick and punchy with Cinemag transformers.
I;m pretty sure Cinemag in there will sound nice as well!!
Cant wait man!

Jorge.

Well that's why I used terminals. You will be able to quickly remove and try another XFR of your choice both for input and output.

Did you need to change part values for the Cinemags? Don't forget I only use Line in. The output is same as 1290.

Resistors and some caps are done. I'm missing some parts and received 2 wrong switches so I have to wait for delivery before I can finish!  :'(

Jim

Hey Jim.  Y'all get those switches yet?  I'm anxious to know your findings.

Yes I got one of the switches and waiting for the last one! I also need some resistor values for the modified gain switch (12 steps) but I can get those locally. The prototype case is supposed to be shipping or has shipped. I need the case too as the front panel has to fit those switches. I'm hesitant to solder them in place as they have a bit of play and that could be a problem when fitting to panel after they are soldered in place. Hopefully I'll have everything soon as I'd like to test before Christmas.

Your 1290s can be hooked up like any other pre. Its output is line level. The 1084EQ's input is line level. You'd be going through an extra set of XFRs though.

these sound like a great match for my ez1290s.  not sure how id hookem up though as i dont have line ins on these pres.

You could build the EQ section and insert it where the trimmer goes on the EZ1290, as shown on the 1084 block diagram below:

If, like me, you have your EZ1290s in a separate enclosure, you could add insert jacks to the EZ1290s so you can patch an EQ section in. If you want to feed the pres / EQs with a line level source a -20dB pad is a convenient solution and a lot cheaper than a 31267 style trafo!  :)

I don't think a straight patch into teh 1290 would give you same results as 1290 is missing an active section that is in full 1084/1073. But certainly you could patch out from the 1290 into the EQ.

Jim

Thanks for the info Jim!

Out of interest, could you possibly point me towards which active section is missing? As far as I could tell, the 1084 with EQ bypassed would be the same as the EZ1290 (noting that the "PART BA284" which comes first in the 1084 is the same curcuit as the BA183NV in the front end of the EZ1290).

The BA283NV and BA283AM which form the 2nd and 3rd stages of the 1084 appear the same as the EZ1290's 2nd and 3rd stages too. I was guessing that the rest of the BA284 and all other EQ components would be built on the PCB you're designing.

Sorry if I've missed something and thanks for putting so much work into this awesome project!

Matthew

No you haven't missed anything. Its the same for both but...this one is line input only so part of the BA284 is not needed (BA283AV). I'm just writing this from memory so I may be wrong on the nomenclature. So yes there are some redundant parts between the EZ1290 and this 1084 but not all.

Labour of love ?
or too far gone to turn back ?

Appreciate your work Jim , How's synth world ?

Hi Greg,

Labour of love for sure and I just don't like to hype things up too much that's all. It will be done when its done 100%.

Thanks for the nice word. Synth world? Do you mistake me for someone else? ;D

Jim

I dont want to step into private matters but i tested the EQ today at my home studio.
Dont want to say to much..Jim has so much to say!
I'm sure Jim is gonna beat me to death for revealing this thing but this EQ is sweet.
Pretty sweet actually...i liked so much on some mixes that a pair would be need to remix some tracks i mixed long ago.
Everything sounds so smooth but EQ and bypass are like nite and day!

I'll let the owner of the project say more than me!!

I'll take 2 boards.
