Dave,

yeah the VU opto is wired to ground instead of to +24v.

The link to Fred's VU circuit is back on the first few pages of this thread.
It works perfect . I'll look for a link to it. (edit) it's in the first post... http://www.forsselltech.com/SideChain.PDF

cheers,
Lance

now that we almost have boards in our hands, where to get those VTL5C1 in Europe?
Farnell don't have them (just silonex)
Oh.. Tom, have u maybe tought about a group order for those too? you can ship them along with the pcb's..
just an idea..
can't wait to start soldering this beauty!!
:guinness:

You can get the VTL5C3 at www.elfa.se. Maybe they have the 5C1 also. What's the difference between these anyway? Can the 5C3 be used in this circuit?

Found it in my own backyard!!
Right here in Portland Oregon USA there is a vintage online tube amp shop with the optocoupler...

$13.50 USD each

Is this a good price?

For whatever reason, I haven't been keeping up with this thread. I read the whole thread (yes, all 25 pages) today and man, this is awesome !!! Just wanted to thank everyone for their work, as I'm sure I'll have a pair of these opto's at my disposal in the near future.

After doing a little more searching I found that the company called Magic Parts carrys them and have dealers world wide they give contact numbers here.

I bought from Newark through Farnell. My 16 VTL5C1 were less than 6$ each here in Europe.

hi kvintus,

I don't think you can expect this design to work well with the 5c3.
For all the time you will spend you'll be smart to go with the opto Fred has
designed the circuit around. If you read the pages of this thread there is
mention of a few sources for the VTL5C1.

cheers,
Lance

OK, I read all 25 pages today and I too want to thank everbody here for this! Man, the spirit in this community is marvelous bordering on fantastic. I need to know because I am unsure if I can build one very clean (transparent/ Fred style) and one with that "vintage punch" Buttachunck mentioned, type of opto compressor using the same PCB that are being made available? Did you guys opt for the colored way or can I still make this project transparent?

If you're asking about my pcb, yes you have the option to be clean or colored. Both discrete and 5534 signal paths

Farnell seems to have VTL5C1's too!
Look at this:
http://fi.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/searchPage2.jsp?N=401&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=VTL5C1&Nty=1&specialorder=on

The price looks good too.

cheers!

Okko

Yeah..
I've just phoned Farnell in Italy and they can get me those VTL5C1 for 3.10 Euro each +VAT
Great!!! :thumb:

I'll post my layout if you want to give it a go but being 2 sided, it'll be an adventure for sure

Here's what I posted in the order thread in the market....

I'm gonna leave this one open until Teusday night. I'll then take a final count and place the order. I'm supposed to go to Chicago Wednesday for about 4-5 days so I won't be able to answer any questions 'till I'm back.

Surprisingly, I haven't had a volunteer to double check the layout. I would really appreciate some help in this area.
