Hi guys !
Let me present you my new baby, a mic pre / compressor combo : 1xVP25 + 1x1176 revA in one box.
VP25 with gar2520 DOA from Jeff @ ClassicAPI
1176 revA from Mnats & Hairball. It’s my 3rd 1176 revA. The other 2 have carbon comp resistors in the signal path, good vibe but a litlle noisy. Not a problem with rock music but this combo is intented to be used for commercial speech recordings and I need it to be quiet so I’ve put metal film resistors everywhere this time, so it is much less noisy. Like on the 2 other, I’ve put 5088 transistors for a clearer sound than 3708.
The 2 units are powered by a JLM Power Station which works perfectly. A 4PDT toggle switch allowed me to daisy chain mic pre and compressor or split them for 2 independant units.
Everything goes flawlessly, works at the 1st powering up… and of course it sounds awesome. Before that I used a Portico 5016 mic pre and a 1176 revA with carbon comp resistors. The result with the VP25 is less fatter, but more agressive and in your face, like I expected (this is the 1st API-ish mic pre I have).
A big, big « thank you !!!» to Mnats, Jeff and Joe from JLM for having made these projects.
DIY rocks,
Ben
