bought a few S500 (Sifam AL-19 replica?) meters for my VCA builds, and im sad to see the needle bouncing way too much when going back to zero.  its not "sticking" back to the resting position easily. can i help this somehow, or is this how this particular meter is designed?

thanks

these are from Don's Audio, 34+ EUR each. but i guess not real Sifam..
so live with it, right?

Yes, I think so.  The Sifam AL-19 will adhere to a movement stability standard that the cheap ones do not follow, but are still not quite 'VU standard' for movement.  The 1939 VU meter standard fixed the problem of bouncy meters, but the more recent decades of cheap alternatives have brought back the bounce.  S-500 isn't a VU, or really a Sifam replica, it just fits the same cutout.  The original type VCA 1mA meter probably does have a tighter movement standard than the S-500, but I couldn't say what it is.  You could investigate some timing cap options on the meter specifically to damp it's movement, so long as they don't interfere with the rest of your circuit.  May or may not do anything useful.
