DAMN - I think I minght know the reason why I dont have audio.  I think I forgot to bend or cut on of the 2180 legs off.     can that be it
?

it should be said that I have the trimmers in next to the VCA area
Leaving out the 68R and one or all resistors in the series string of the 10K/1M/50Ktrim connecting to pin4 of the THAT2180 will have the same effect and your VCA won't look half broken.

This will not be the reason for no audio at all. Look out for shorts first. If its only too low level audio out, double check parts values.

Hoping someone may be able to help me with a problem I am having with my GSSL.

I recently re- racked a build I did years ago and It is behaving very odd. This is an original stock (no turbo/sidechain add on boards).

SYMPTOMS.
When turning threshold all the way to right (full) the unit appears to loose power (LED's black out and no sound).
Even slight movement on the threshold sends the meter slaming to the right. Also a slight increase in volume just before threshold kicks in.

I have swapped the sidechain VCA and TL074 with others but to no avail. Appears to be equal left and right.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Double check value of the 220K resistor between threshold-wiper/"F" and TL072-pin2/virtual ground. If this is mistakenly something like 220R, this will shut down the 78L12 to self protection mode with pot in full cw position. If so, this 50Klin threshold pot could be broken/burnt as well.
Just an idea. Good luck.

hi guys!
my gssl now is working correctly.
i changed TL074s on the main and the Turbo board, and both SC VCAs. it wasn't working, so i changed all VCAs and that's it.
every one of them was blown. ok.

now i noticed that the comp makes a big "PUFF" when i power it on or off. it's very annoying.
is there a mod or something to make this stop?

Yes thanks it was the 50K pot.

One thing though still causing problems is either the input is too high or the threshold is too low. If I run a mix through it with threshold set to minimum I am getting 8db or gain reduction.

Don't power off equipment while it's connected to monitor/speaker path..

Hey, people.

Does anybody know of a high pass filter side chain PCB to connect to the GSSL clone main board? I have found boards like the GSSLTURBO and Super Side Chain, but I'm not sure if these boards cater for what I need. If anybody knows about a s/c filter board or schematic, please let me know.

Thank you,

Steven.

Yes, there's several. Here's ho to get the info.
1) go to the lab forum > http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?board=2.0
2) on top you'll see a sticky thread called the  "Meta-Meta: Look here for overview.." >  http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=16013.0
3) go to the "SSL Clone posts" section > http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=110
4) search for the word "side chain" using the search function in your browser.
5) amongst others you'll find this thread > http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=12024

in general, the meta thread is where your search begins...

thanks. yeah, that's a great idea..
sometimes common sense is a good resource..

hey guys, on my boards there appears to be a star next to each 1k resistor in the VCA section just next to the NE5534s.
I can seem to find any info on what the stars mean and what I should change them to.
I'm using the 2180 VCA's.

Hey Steven, I once designed a relay-control stereo pure hipass filter board for my version of the SSL, so that it would work together with the Turbo. Without the turbo, you can just build Steffen's version after the 47k summing R's, but with the turbo in you need to have a stereo path (though irl the hipass doesn't need to be in when doing turbo stuff), so I basically did a "Stereo Steffen"

SSL Stereo Hipass

It's very basic, one filter bypass position, four hipass settings (more than enough @work) and one ext-sc in position so you can do key in. Don't know if this is what you're looking for but maybe it can help.

Has relays because of my LEDs taking up half the Lorlin btw, you can basically just kick them out and do stereo right through the lorlin if you want to. And of course you can add more relays easy enough if you want more hipass positions.

Could anybody tell me if it's possible to power the power on led from greg's bom and the behringer meter led from the daughter board ?  Or would that be drawing too much power?  I don't want to try it for fear of blowing something up.

ignore the stars...

Power any LED stuff from the +-15V regs or after the filter caps, and anything incandescent from the trafo secondary (if the voltage is right). You can't blow stuff up with LEDs on the SSL because the little 78L12 will fold back on too much current draw.

Could I power the led for the meter from the positive 15v wire link on the main board and just ground it to the chassis?  I would use a proper resistor of course?  I'm really getting burnt out on this project.  I really had no idea what I was getting into.  :)

Yah, always take a moment to stand back...Helps keep you from getting your chip flipped.
...but sure, you can use the 15V link and ground to chassis as long as the connection is stable.

Thanks for the words of support.  I still need some help figuring out what size resistor I'm going to need to drop down the 15v to what I hear the Behringer led requires, which is, I think, somewhere between 3-3.3 volts.  Does anybody know what the LED forward voltage is of the Behringer led?

Much appreciated!

Sorry for the double post but I still have one more problem with my GSSL.

If I run a mix through it with threshold set to minimum I am still getting 8db or gain reduction. Have tried the 47K resistor with one leg of the threshold pot but no real difference.

If I lower the input to the GSSL by aroud 10db all works fine but not very convenient or practical.

What Behringer LED - don't those have something like a incandescent bulb that dies as soon as you wanna show off your "vintage meter"?

FWIW, LEDs generally float between 1.8 and 2.2V - calculate with this and season resistor to taste wrt brightness.
