I've just finished the GSSL compressor, and I have some issues :-\ : When I play stereo music through it, I only hear the right side coming back. The bypass switch is working, and when it's ON position, I can control the output gain pot, but nothing else. The LED is working, but the meter is not. And two of the three big regulators are heating (7812, 7815), when the mains plugged in.
Please help me!


"heating" regulators is a little too vague to draw conclusions..Have you checked your voltages? Have you traced the signal through the left side?

Due to the amount of problems you are having, it might be beneficial to see your soldering work. Could you post a picture?

I won't have time today to check the soldering, etc., but I checked the in/out cabling and I switched the IC's, these are correct.

I did that (switched on and off) but now it is bypassing audio all the time, no compression at all..

Without either a cap with value for desired hpf frequency or a jumper in the "*HPF" position (actually signal flow is interrupted), the unit will not compress and the meter will not move.

Common error, and something I forgot in a build guide at some point.

Thanks a lot! It's working fine, but still just the left side, and the phase is reversed. :S (the connections and the cabling are correct.)

so did no one ever build this thing with 202c vcas? im pretty sure i'll need 1M resistors and 50k trimpots for it but it would be great to get a confirmation on that. i've been asking this question for over a month now - anyone?

Correct, I'll attach the SB4K schemo below.  Look on the middle/left side for a chart that tells you what you need to use for 202C cans.  Should translate to the GSSL.  Please do me a favor and let me know if you discover any issues or extra considerations that need to be kept in mind w/ the 202C's.  I built one successfully with THAT's and I'm going to build one w/ 202's next month.  Thanks.

The 10Ohms are a kind of Fuse!
You got somewhere a short to ground from supply voltage!
Got the same problem some weeks ago!

Check for shorts,

It looks to be the same 50k pot that the THAT 2181 uses so I imagine we calibrate them the same way, though don't take my word for it.

thanks jakob. i think i know what to do finally :) can you let us know how to set the trimpots? connecting a scope and look for clipping? thanks
 
The easiest is to connect to some sort of a distortion meter - trim function dosen´t show up as symmetry in clipping or the like. Without a distortion meter, leave trimmers centred.

little feedback. i connected the board with 1M resistors and 50k trimpots surrounding the 202cs. it works just as it should and sounds very nice!
 
hello !! eeeh so ... hehe i got a bit of a problem... all is fine but right channel is a few db lower than the left channel! (around 4 db ish) this happens with compression on or off.. turbo or single sidechain :/
mm i checked the wiring and its all correct i built 1 other unit working correctly (hopefully the third also will work) so component placement should be right!
i can just assume to check the in / out section for any bad soldering, but any other suggestions?
