It's worrying, though. If the virus jumps to pigs (not currently monitored, from what I've heard last week) things can get messy...

This is only new, in the sense that we weren't aware before.

Your body's weight is for a large percentage not yours. It hosts so many other organisms we have to review our concept of a human body. A large percentage of your DNA also isn't yours. It's viral and in most cases, it's good. Every now and then something isn't good and we get sick.

In the grand scheme the individual doesn't count. It's "survival of the species". And every ally needs to be tested.

My understanding is, that if it jumps from cattle in the US to pigs at US farms that will be a very worrying escalation. So far, to our knowledge, this has not happened.

This is precisely what evolution has on the table for any species though. Earth does its utmost to cultivate the strongest to survive. Unfortunately since a few thousand years, it decided to groom us - the crickets with monkey faces - to be at the forefront.

There is absolutely no reason it won't happen soon. And there is also no reason why it wouldn't happen at all.

The entire list contains only three species that don't eat birds. With cows and donkeys, one could speculate they caught it from bird dung, but dolphins?

What this looks like to me is a slow beginning. There have only been 900 human cases reported since 1997. Doesn't look like a pandemic, does it?

But certainly worth keeping an eye on, if you're interested.

H1N1 was pretty bad. My wife's friend's daughter was laid up in the hospital for 2 weeks...
About a month before Covid hit.. Pretty sure I brought it up here when it all started...
