I it ossible to combine both functions because an LED is, after all, a diode; just one with a larger than normal forward voltage drop.

Yes and no. The problem with LEDs is their reverse voltage is very limited so if you want to use them on ac it is best to put a diode in parallel with them to handle the current in the opposite direction.

I am not sure what the two (both?) functions you are asking about combining.

Indeed LEDs look like squishy diodes, as Ian mentioned reverse breakdown voltage is not generally specified because there aren't generally used that way... I have used them as low voltage references, etc.

In most datasheets, the max reverse voltage is usually specified as 5V, which isn't much, so... Best to just avoid that possibility (?).
