I received a nice package from Alesis LLC today containing the entire service manual and schematics for the console. I haven't had a chance to go through the thing ( over an inch thick!) but if anyone is interested in any certain part of the console, PM me and I'll find a scanner and scan it.

Wow, I'm sorry. I had an X2, the whole board crackled like crazy every time I touched a know. Perhaps with some good pots, DC power filtering and TLC you can turn it into something nice. It sure sounded good, but it was built by the lowest bidder in China. (Modules built in China, assembled into console in the US.)

You might want to replace the talkback switch, that was the first to go for me. We used to bruise our finger leaning on that little button -- it only worked when you hammered on it. And a nice DC pop in the client's phones.

Make sure you have the latest power supply mods, too. Quite a few consoles got smoked by the power supply. Oh, and there's a static mod that keeps channels from muting (without turning on the mute light) when you touch the console. That was a fun one to troubleshoot, I'll bet.

Did I mention it sounded pretty nice? But after spending six months turning into something reliable, you could have been working at the gas station and have enough for a small API 7300 system. Something to consider.

Good luck, though. :guinness:

thanks synthetic, I've had mine for over a year now and have never had any problems with it besides nature's fury and neglect from the previous owner. I've modded the piss out of it to the point where almost no original 'lytic or ceramic caps exist, most of which have polypro/polyester in parallel, a lot of the ICs have been replaced with quality parts, etc. the PS mod had been done by the factory (this is a late model) and there has never been any problems with static and muting, except for when lightning hit the building and fried a few channels and stuck them into mute mode, but that was easily repaired with free samples from TI! It did sound nice originally, but changing the caps and ICs to matching parts has taken it to another level entirely. there was some crackling when i got the board but found that the pots were dirty and that a lot of cheapo 'lytics had dried up/leaking causing DC problems(the better quality ones were still working).. between repairing those all the crackles are gone. Never had any problems with the switches at all so far and I'm always hitting the switches..

did i mention i got this console for cheap(1100$) because it has a bad reputation.. :green: and for say, 300-400$(if that much..) I've recapped, added and changed parts, and upgraded to the point that I am so much happier that i bought this console than a mackie 8 buss or a soundcraft ghost.

just my .02$ worth, I guess it's all relative to how much work you are willing to do to get what you want. I stand by my opinion that this console may not be the best, but it certainly is a good place to start if you want a cheap and easily repaired mixer with more features than most others.

sorry, i just read over that and it sounds like a commercial!

I always thought that the X2 would be a great board if someone was patient enough to work on it. Congratulations, it sounds like you have a killer board there. I liked the EQ and the preamps were nice, definitely better than Mackies and others in that price range. I always got a lot of "depth" doing mixes on that board. You probably have the equivalent to an Amek Mozart with your mods.

I actually still own one (with a service manual), it's installed at a friend's studio. Perhaps one day I'll make a project out of it.

What did you use for the talkback switch? I always KILLED myself on that thing. My index finger hurts just thinking about it.

my talkbackswitch is still the original. never had a problem with it. I'd bet your problem is a dirty switch(contacts) or that the solderjoint has broken where it meets the board (have to press hard to make the joint make contact?).

I went through the schematics over the weekend and it seems I am missing parts, I have all the schematics for the digital sections, for the led meters, the main channels and the busses.

I have the schematic for the preamp and eq sections(they look different from the board though...) but i am missing the schematics for the rest of the mono channel strips, the aux sends and the main faders..?

I'm still trying to find a scanner to get these scanned.
