Info on Tascam M-16 Console

Hey Guys,

Has anyone even owned or used this console, it was built back in 1983? The only info I have been able to get is the following from the Tascam site.

The TASCAM M-16 was a mixer with 16 inputs, 8 outputs, and a 16-channel monitor section. This board was made in either a 16 input or 24 input configuration, a real flexible mixer that you could buy it with 16 inputs and then add modules later to increase the inputs to 24.

I've not the seen the console in person but a friend owns one and it is gathering dust, and he doesn't know what to do with it. I've wondering what it sounds like and if it would be worth getting at tweaking it up. All I know is that the outs are on RCA for interfacing with a 8 track, not XLR so I assume it is unbalanced?

Any info would be of great help.

I had one of these consoles early on in my studio. I would describe it as "functional". Not terrible sounding, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it sounded good either. I remember it being quite noisey, as well. I ended up getting rid of it in favor of a mackie, if that tells you anything :shock: . That said, it was a good first desk and it worked flawlessly, despite its age...and it sounded pretty gnarly when overdriven.

Hey David,

Thanks for the heads up. This desk is old, cica 1983, as far as I knwo it was more of a 'middle' of the road console. It is just gathering dust at a friends place and I wanted to see if it was worth tweaking and using it.

Am I right in saying the out were all on RCA jacks?

if i remember correctly (and i may not), there were a few xlr outs along with the rca's - main outs only, maybe? definetly rca for all of the channel sends, inserts etc.
