Can someone suggest some transistors for me to check out?

Ive got a line driver circuit on the bench that that works really well with 2N3055 as the output device. For the standing current Im running, the TO-3 case can get by without a heatsink. I don't need the high voltage and current capability of the 3055. are there any cheap, medium power linear transistors that come in a TO-3 case? I dont know where to look.

thanks,
mike p

2n3055 is not ideal. would prefer higher Ft. something like MJE181 but in a TO-3 case.

I hear you though, it is working right now so maybe I shold leave it alone.

If I understand it correctly you want the TO-3 case so that you can get by without additional cooling, right ?

There are other case-styles that combine metal back-plates & plastic tops that fit TO-3 connections and even have better (lower) K/W values.
The two outer leads are the same spacing as the B & E pins of the TO-3 & the metal plate is connected to one of the original TO-3 holes.

Like this one (the package, not the type since this one happens to be a Darlington):

Packages are TO-218, TO-247, ...
Not unlikely those (newer) devices in this package have higher fT's.
