What are the major hurdles to installing a km54 circuit in a m582 body with a m94 head? I understand the capsule in the m94 is identical or near identical to that in the km54 albeit in a different housing. It seems like a cheap way to get a km54-esque mic but I can't see evidence of it being done before - what's the catch?

The tube and transformer are different. The KM54 used a rare and expensive tube (AC701) and a BV13 transformer.
Basically the M582 is a similar circuit with a EC92 tube, so it is already in the ballpark as other DIY clone attempts of AC701 mics.
The M582 are still expensive enough to prevent people from hacking them I guess.

Yes Ok that makes sense, but say one was willing to buy an AC701 and a TAB reproduction tranny and maybe have a body built to spec or purchase a cheaper compatible body like an mv690.

I'm thinking it would still likely run $1000 - 1500 but if you were 90% to a KM54 seems like it would still be a worthwhile endeavour?

To clarify I mean gut the thing and reproduce the KM54 circuit rather than do a mod.

I thought KM54´s in need of a little tlc were around that price to start with?

Maybe if you are patient  ;) I was bidding on a mic (no psi) that went for about $1200 but the capsule needed to be re-skinned.
