I'm not really sure of the terminology which is probably why i'm not finding so many results.  Basically, I just bought a Vox wah and I plan to mod it with a few Q adjustments.  One mod requires a mini rotary switch so I can flip between cap values - i'm hoping to find one with three (or four) positions.

The catch is I want to maintain a 1/4" shaft, panel mount rotary switch - otherwise I need to have as small a footprint as possible.  Most rotary switches i'm coming across are an inch or so in diameter... i'm really hoping to find an option half this size.

Can anyone help me out with my search?

something like this:

shaft diameter I  did not check.... probably you will need an adapter

They're certainly not cheap, are they  :-[  I may have to investigate using a regular rotary switch - although clearance is likely to be very tight.

While i'm on this subject, can anyone describe how these switches would be named?  Rotary switches are a new component to me and i'm unsure how the terminology works for them.  I'm basically looking at a three or four position switch, with only one active path at any one point in time.

What you are looking for is a "single pole 3 throw" switch (or 4 throw). You will see them as SP3T or SP4T. Many rotary switches will be be adjustable so you will see them as 2-12 position, or some other range. "Position" and "throw" tend to mean the same thing but I am always weary of advising someone that any terminology is interchangeable, so always read the data sheet carefully. You only need 1 deck. If you look at those big open frame switches (like you see in old neve gear) you will see multiple levels on the switch. These are decks. Poles and decks are not interchangeable, as a single deck can have multiple poles.

In any practical application you would naturally realize these schematics are not at all representative of a switch. I know it is obvious but I figure I should mention just in case.

This is what a rotary switch schematic should look like (this is a dual pole 6 throw switch or DP6T)

Look up Lorlin rotary switches on www.mouser.com. In the search box enter Lorlin switches. They only cost $4.70 ea., com in shorting, non shorting; get the one that is 2 pole 6 positions.

Here is what you need; a 9mm switch (1P6T):

I've used it before, and it has a good solid feel.

Uraltone has the same kind AMZ-FX linked, but 3 and 4-pole versions.
