how about an optical compressor like LA2A 500 series

Not sure how you're gonna get a 4 tubes, 2 transformers and a T4B opto in a 500 series slot, not
too mention the fact that you need around 300v's for the tube plates.

For an 500 series solid state optical comp, look here.

Yes, I like this opto thing. Looks really nice.

Ok....Envelope Shaper... Envy Loop Shaper...Whatever...
OK, playing with layout. Balanced line receiver/driver are added.
Do we need here hardware bypass?

Regarding 1176: I hate oversqueeezed knobs, than, no VU-meter.
There should be space for "british mode", "bypass", and "out/gr" controls.
I want to use Grayhill 71 series for ratio/attack/release,
and 600 Ohm T-pad at the input (as 1st option),
next option is balanced line receiver+10k pot next to it....
After redrawing the schematic in way it possible to understand,
there are some ideas about different amplifier types....
Definately going to replace detector/phase splitter amp
(or GR control amp like it called on schemo), 4x2N3707 transitors + resistors bunch,
to dual opamp with 4 resistors. It will work absolutely same and will not affect the sound,
and will free some space for bigger audio components.
Here idea about how front comes out, Grayhills (two top switches) instead of input/output pots:

Wish you to stay insane and never mix hobby and work :)
No, after some thinking....DO IT!!!! :) Why.
Audio electronics is my hobby from age 8.
At 17, I was FOH sound-man at medium-size theater in Russia
(1400 people sits, sorry my English but hopefully understandable :)
At 18, was working with big-bend, monitor sound-man.
Moved to Israel at 20, was tech of the house in local studio 2.5 years.
Than, PA company. Repairs were my day work, PA at the night.
After 2003, PA/stidio business crushed here, was working with
local hi-tech as electronics engineer, and this was gray time for me.
Last 3-4 years I doing audio units, repairs, maintenance for local studios (and not only).
Well, it usual bio for most people here. I think I am happy with this.

/my post Nr 1178!!!

too many jobs.....  ;)

and the girlfriend?   ???

anyway ,  i "agree" with babyhead and rednoise
for a FULL 1 0 7 3
with a simply and not expensive "rotary switches solution"

Is there something difficult about the 550A EQ that makes it difficult to clone? Perhaps availability of the switches? Are the inductors difficult to clone?

what if you make the 1176 a dual unit, keep the vu meter but maybe only wired for GR monitoring. Then you could keep the original side-chain amo and maybe make room for input trafo option???

Why not make a pair of 1176 and use matched FET's?
VU-meter takes too much space, and I hate oversqueezed knobs.
Stay tuned, 3 cool projects are on the way :)
