Hi everyone,

this is my first post here, seems like a nice place with lots of knowledge around! I am student (=low cash) currently recording an EP with a friend of mine in the stlye of electronica, nusoul, funk and jazz. so we work a lot "in the box" - because of samples, but also because of budget. Some things - like certain percussions, rhodes, bass, certain synth sounds and maybe vocals will be recorded the "oldskool" way though.

So as I said I am a student but I have some cash at my disposal, some of it will go towards some adam monitors for proper mixing. the rest I want to throw towards a nice diy project - a channelstrip with DI option if possible. I am willing to do the soldering myself, but I am more a "paint by numbers" guy.
So far I have built:

WTPA 8bit sampler from narrat1ve.com - had to do some trouble shooting there, but it worked in the end (my first project)
Shruti-1 Synth from mutable-instruments.net
some fuzz boxes and a cacophonator.

So I guess I am somewhat handy with the soldering iron. I would like to buy a complete kit for a nice quality preamp / compressor.
what would you recommend me from this site - again: I am looking for the 70s soul / funk sound and I am going to record a little of everything (bass/rhodes/guitar/synth/vox maybe too) and a DI option would be nice. I am looking for something not overly complicated - but it should deliver nice results and be worth the work and a nice base to build a studio on.

so far I ordered some of bo hansens di pcbs - but please give me some recommendations for a nice preamp and compressor combination.

No channel strip "kits" are available here as far as I know.

It seems a little misdirected in how your allocating your budget. A great mix
requires much, much more than a good set of monitors. Why not put that
money towards a good channel strip so your tracks sound great and then
pay a good local studio to have your record mixed.

Results = great sounding record + less headaches + the satisfaction of knowing it's done right.

The Fink Audio CS2-FA looks like it will fit the bill, no soldering required.

Or you could start assembling a "channel strip" by building some of the 500
series projects that are available here.

Good luck.

wow 4500 euros. not exactly what I was looking for budget wise.

well, the diy stuff looks good, thanks for the link.

You're talking a tube mic pre, pultec type EQ and an 1176 x2, stereo linkable, built with the best components.

$2K / channel is a deal.

I don't think you could build it for much less.

Maybe take the Neve 1084 project and marry it to the 1176 rev d? That would make quite a lot of sense to me..

If you are really 'paint by numbers' then you might try the EZ1290 pre-amp project, they sound great and the instructions are very good indeed. Works superbly with all types of mic, it's a winner, I use my 4 channels all the time.

After that try a 1176, I just built a couple of rev A units using the hairball cases, it helps to be able to read a schematic but they make a great noise!

good luck

thanks! I will have a look at these!

A option is the 500/51X series to get you going.

There inexpensive, patch into other gear easy and you can roll your own channel configurations.

A couple guys in the white market sell good kits for the 500/51X lines and have good instructions.
