What type circuit does the R1 have? What does the capsule look like?

ok, here are some pics. again from what i know this is a soundelux R1. One of their early chinese made models. i was going to gut it but saw some wimas on the pcb and figured i should give it a try. I have the peluso capsule on the way.

anyone have a schematic or know why this isn't a good idea please let me know. (don't want to fry my peluso!!)

does the white ring have writing on it?
14 screws a side?
is it about 34mm OD?
Might be a 797 capsule.

Is it transformerless? I can't tell from the picture

What do you not like about it?

transformerless
white ring does have writing on it.
14 per side

its kind of grainy. not very detailed.

im hoping the peluso will be a step up from the 797. what do you think?
David Bock or JP? I will let you make your own mind up
In other words, whom would you rather trust D. Bock, who has very respectable line of mics, or JP who has been caught on lies many times?

Just wondering why would you think Peluso capsule is a step up from 797?

Also, the "Dorsey mod" had very specific goal to improve MXL2001.
Indeed it did... because the 2001 was maybe the worst sounding mic ever commercially produced, I believe.
FYI, the "Dorsey mod" was little bit better... not by much.

So what would you accomplish here, considering the fact, it is very well might be the case the real Schopes circuit without cutting corners is already in your mic?

well im not sure that it would be a step up i said im hoping the peluso will be a step up from the 797. what do you think?

i didn't realize that these pelusos were questionable. don't most people use these for the G9?

im definately keeping the stock circuit, it has some higher end components in it so i guess ill just try the CEK-89 and let the ears decide.

thanks for your help

My own (admittedly limited) experience with John Peluso was totally satisfactory. I ordered a dual diaphragm CEK-89 from him, got what I paid for, quickly, and found it to be a huge upgrade to a stock Chinese mic (Apex 415, not useful for most anything until the replacement IMHO).

If you'd dig through Gearslutz, you'd beable to find a rather vicious attack on JP from the most notorious and negative poster (many of you know who I mean) who is a regular over there and many other places, based only on heresay and no personal experience or contact from literally decades in the past. ("I heard he designed a studio for some guys and they said...", something like that). Amazing to me that this attack is still having repercussions now in 2007. If everyone who has had a successful business dealing with him were to post an "AOK" here...well I won't suggest that. Who'd have the patience to scroll through it?

JP has given me excellent customer service. I bought a CK-89 during a bad run (he was having some QC issues at that time). He replaced the capsule twice until I was happy and even gave me a free extra capsule for the trouble. I really like my CK-89 now, which is built into a Royer circuit. It is my favorite vocal mic for my voice that I have used so far, beating out some of the classic heavy hitters. I also have a CK-12 which I am not crazy about. It's a good capsule, but not to my taste, at least on my voice. I would say that both capsules are superior to any stock Chinese capsule I've heard, including a 797 and an SE electronics.

I'll probably have my CK-89 for the rest of my life. The CK-12 will probably being going up on the black market soon. It's all a matter of taste.

I recently got two Peluso mics for review. I have to admit that I was a little cautious, having heard dubious stuff about JP and seeing that he obviouly uses Chinese made parts, also for his capsules. But I must say that the mics sounded very convincing. Definetly better than any of the Chinese mics I've had. I'm not crazy about the mics' cosmetics, and I've seen better soldering elsewhere. But soundwise and also with respect to noise, the mics were excellent.

The Schoepps circuit you posted has nothing to do with the R-1 circuit, it's quite a bit more complicated than that.
Kind of like a modified U47fet with a current sourced complimentary pair output substituting for the transformer.
