do you need to wrap up the silver shield and use it as a ground? Which slot (1,2,3 M/F) does the silver shield go?

Also, the white wire is cold, right? I'm dealing with blue and white, and blue's gotta be hot (contrary to colors and their perceived representation of temperature :D), right?

thanks!

If you're talking about XLR connectors, shield goes to 1 on both sides. In order to respect polarity, pin 2 must go to pin 2, and pin 3 to pin 3. The choice of colour for hot or cold is not cast in stone. There is no standard. But I would use white as hot (pin 2) and blue as cold (pin 3) since blue is almost universally identified as negative.
