ricardo's suggestion about time and money spent is well worth thinking about. I compared a well known mic modders mic to a stock Rode NT1A and found the modded mic lacking gain, presence, and punch.
Made changes on my own to the stock mic, including the capsule, but not the head-basket changes and the mic is now acceptable for Voiceover. The modded Nt1A still lacks presence and a solid low end.
Cost of my personal mods - including capsule? $117.00 USD. Was it worth it? Maybe. The mic will never be a "got-to" mic, but it does make a nice secondary or travel mic.
