So, I want to build a 12-channel passive, balanced mixer, for tactile monitor mixing in the LR.

I like the look of NYD's idea: http://www.twin-x.com/groupdiy/albums/userpics/balancedmixnetwork.pdf

I'm thinking a shallow 2U box with rotary pots and L/C/R switches, and F-Series 'winky' mutes.
The advantages here for me are saving space and transformer cost while keeping it balanced.

But does anyone know where to find nice sturdy 5k (or 4k7) dual log pots for the level controls?

I could only find these: http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?sku=RE04439

CP is nice, but I would prefer something more rugged with a metal shaft. CTS, for example, would be great.

It seems that low value log pots are just disappearing generally and choice is non-existent.

What should I do?

you want rugged with a metal shaft, you pay!

the whole selection: http://www.banzaimusic.com/Stereo-c-472/

I've used the single deck versions of these a lot, and while the feel is a bit weak, the construction is top notch.

Hai Ya! Well, I didn't expect to get them for free!  ;D

Thanks for the link, though. Those are a little steep for me, but it helps to know what to look for.

I have a good experience with the blue Alps pots. Not very cheap though...
I think you could also use 10K pots, it won't make a big difference since they are not loaded with a low impedance.
(By the way: the schematic says: input impedance 20K. But IMHO 5K+5K = 10 K!)
