1176 rev a troubles

Just bought a hairball mnats2.0 1176 rev a and testing it out.

The sound is veeery harsh/bright, with a big lack of low end.
And the output knob is only doing a few db when turning it all the way back and forth.
And the vu meter is working ok when all-buttons-mode is engaged, but when doing single ratio button, the needle sits at 30db and pushing down to 0, seems like the wrong way compared to what i've experienced otherwise?!

I've tested from two different preamps (1073 and a pacifica) with different settings (pad etc).

Any ideas of where i could start to look or test to troubleshoot this?

You can start by trying to calibrate the unit

Thanks alot, i will check it out!
Heres a quick audio recording of how it sounds, i mean it should be abit colored but this seems very weird?
Also on the mp3 with the 1176, after half of it, i turned the output know back and forth and almost nothing happened.

My chain was a stam sa-800g -> adesign pacifica -> 1176
and i tried different outputs from the preamp and different inputs on the 1176.

Do you recognize the sound of it on? Maybe its typical of a broken "something"?
