Hiya Fellas,

Well after getting my hands on some time, I managed to have another little look over this bugger.., and found the problem.....
I could kick myself... :-[
The signs were there all the time as well...

Loud hum coming from the amp, unable to turn it down....... Instinct was telling me it was the power supply,.... and it was.

here's the situation.
its a double sided board from the mid 80's...
one of the 'brute force' caps, upon removal, had taken out, one of the pads' hole via connecting the top and bottom track together.
Basically, only one of the caps was in circuit. No bloody wonder I had 25V AC ripple after the rectifier !!!
Sorted that - ripple down to a much smaller 1.5V AC, and the amp sounds really good !, bloody gorgeous in fact.

Learn't a fair bit about amps doing it as well !

So you can safely ignore the other respective posts....,

Needless to say, my mate is well happy he got his amp back ( And I explained to him, that he should take a bit more care removing caps in the future !!!)
I love a happy ending ;)

Steve
