Hi Group,

Has anyone had direct experience with the SHS S71 large diaphragm condenser microphone? I think I've found everything readily available on the internet, which is not a lot, so please don't bother posting links to pages I've already looked at and read. I'm capable of a Google search and have already done multiple. I'm only interested in anyone's direct experience with this specific microphone. I've already looked at the following, so please share your experiences, impressions, etc.

In addition to your experience, I'm looking to get some questions answered, and perhaps I'm just not savvy enough to derive them from the specifications I've been able to find, which is quite likely as I'm not an audio expert, as many of you are. "I'm just a simple caveman lawyer."
  • Question: what is the size and type of condenser? True condenser, or is this a permanently charged electret?
  • Question: What is the microphone's self-noise like?
The only specifications I've found are from the Play Better Bluegrass link above.

I can't help with personal 'hands on' experience, but to answer your 2 questions:

• The photo of the S71 shown on this page: https://reverb.com/item/59563000-shs-s71-condenser-microphone suggests a 25 mm capsule is fitted.
That will almost certainly be an electret..... Probably something like the one mentioned at the top of this page: https://audioimprov.com/AudioImprov/Mics/Entries/2019/9/7_More_Electret_Capsules.html
Those capsules are not exactly in the same class as 34mm LDC 'true condensers', but can produce some surprisingly good results.
They tend to perform better than the price might suggest!... Used in many budget mics.

• Based on the published spec, the self noise appears to be around 16dB (probably A weighted ?)
To put that into context "good enough for most purposes" according' to Neumann's noise evaluation. (See HERE )

So, probably a reasonable sounding 'budget' style mic, I would think? ...

Thank you so much. This is exactly what I was looking for.
