Is the Lundahl 1577 a good alternative to the 1538xl for this preamp
Thanks
francois
hi francois,

no not really. allthough i do like that LL1577 a lot, it doesn't have the openness and headroom that suits this pre. even in 1:7 mode. if you got some i'd suggest saving them for another pre or use them backwards in a DI situation. they're real nice for that with their slightly rolled off top

but the pre will work with them, so if that's all you got at the moment just pop them in

hah. not. haven't yet put up the schematics ( not that there's any surprises in my revised versions ) 'cause i'm a stoner

did pen down some good text, i think

so, how's your project comming along?

That's a minor detail, the most important part is that you've solved the ambiguity issues. I'm not saying you've pinned down the one and only worthwhile design, but by giving the details you've given, you have cleared up a lot of little loose ends (at least for me).

I'm a while off starting, but it's definetely the next DIY for me.

You mean me? My studio?

Bring back the Massive Attack avatar!!
But at least we know what you look like now; bowl-headed

well, when does one stop to mod? at one i guess you have to draw a line in the sand and called it a new design. i think with the different input stages there's a lot of sonic variation and by using both sections of the 12SN7 you can get all the gain you please

cool. yeah, your studio. nice :thumb:

i've got one 1577 that i'd like to use with a ribbon mic what kind of pre design works well with it
Thanks
The new Massive Attack single (Live With Me?) from the new compilation CD is great!
yeah, i was a terry callier fan before this collab, so it's great. i do not hope that means that old sleepyhead horace isn't appearing anymore though..

but it is false flags that really gives me chill up my spine. great progress for robert. great piano part. eerily it reminds of of a good friend. i think the text is about him.. i hope this is the direction they'll go with the new album. i loved the dark 100th window, sinead is _perfect_ for that

ever since niel became a de facto member i think it's been great. don't listen so much to protection anymore. did you notice that grant is credited for some of the alt versions on the comp? odd.. also is the blank silence bit in black melt is strange. caused a bit of questioning at ma's forum, but robert explained it nicely :thumb:

the be thankfull for what you got vid is great. what a hrmm.. nice lady
Mezzanine = top 5 albums of eternity.
it's super, but it doesn't come together like the other albums. lotsa tension between them at that point. i saw a couple of concerts in that period and they weren't great

i'd go for blue lines as my desert island ma album

seen 'em i think 7-8 times. once, at roskilde festival they played for like +5 hours, with the mad professor doing live dub on their tracks. fukkin' awesome! they'll be playing here in a couple of weeks. whoha!

check out some really great shots of robert:

i got a few rarites like a ma remix of boy george and their first single (produced by smith and mighty, another bunch of bristolians that you should check out if you don't know them)

beam if you want the tracks

you should use the LL1577 in combination with a dual input tube (the whole 12SX/SN7). this will give you a boatload of gain, around 80dB

hi!
i am thinking about giving this pre a try. i can get 7193 (2c22) and 6j5g pretty cheep from a local dealer so the "slowblow 2" seems like a good option, but i havent really decided yet. anyway, my question is: are there any disadvantages using a 6v heater for the 5687s? i think there is something about this in the audiofanzine thread, but my french...

hey müx

note that the 5687 draws 900mA @ 6V3, so you'll need a Vreg (and transformer) that can deal with the 2,5A current draw. An TO-3 LM350 will do fine

yeah, french .. pttfff :green:

cheers,

ole

Svart,
I thought you of all people would think to check this thread.

You're looking for Sismofyt's web link. It has everything you need.

peace out,

Svart, please accept my apologies, I remembered incorrectly.

I suppose I had it in my head that the project was 'complete.' Several versions of schematics have been posted and even though Sismofyt hasn't provided the "official final" drawing, between all the existing schems and the advice he provides on his page, you can actually build the device he describes.
It's a bit of detective work, but I remember feeling satisfied that a final solution was available.
I'm totally unexperienced with tubes and even I feel comfortable there's enough information to do it right.

Having said that..... I too am looking forward to the official base schematics from Sismofyt.

All the best to all,

oh, you mentioned this on page five already...

so wassup with you homepage? updating i hope :)

theres a 12j5g as well. maybe ill use that and stick to the original psu. i have sent both pm and mail to fotis about the transformer and choke, but i did not get any answer. if you read this feel free to contact me.

Did this project get any further ? were many more slow blows made?..
Found this very interesting thread a little confusing with the different versions floating about...I wonder how this pre would sound compared to say a Red 47 pre...
