Been messing around with some cheap ones but it just makes a mess.

And, any favourite solder?

It's been a real workhorse for me, and is relatively cheap for the quality.

As for solder, I think a lot of people here would agree with:

Kester "44"

I like kinda thin solder for what I do, .031" diameter.

This is a leaded solder, so it might not be available in your country.
 
I use a Weller WP-25.  Nice basic iron for $35 or so. 

Although I would think an iron with adjustable temperature would be preferred (see above post).

I use Kester "44" Solder as well (63/37 .025.)
