Although I have to take exception with 11:22. I think lead is a lot more toxic than people think. If you're using lead solder in a poorly ventilated area and find that you're eyes are burning, stop!

I'v done lot proto on vero board in the past, but now when you compare the price between empty proto board and a low run pcb, I think the time spend to wire a proto is better used to layout a pcb in a CAD...faster and more reliable.

I totally agree with lead toxicity, still I'm not sure you can inhale some or have toxic lead fume with the temp involved. ebulition point is at 1k7°C... issue is more with flux ?!?
As far as you wash your hand and don't put them in your mouth I think it's ok

I switch to lead free solder recently for all new stuff/design (keep leaded for all old repair, mix is not good for what I read)
I'm not 100% happy for now, but I hope practice will help. I have inconsistency in joint look and I find difficult to set the proper temp. Also find the rate of solder flow less precise to handle than leaded but I probably have too thick solder, 1mm, what I'm used to with 60/40, I'll take some 1/2mm in my next order...
